The performance is based on a research and performer’s own experience of the perceptive malfunctions called derealization. The performance builds up a situation in which the audience can enter a similar, but abstracted, perceptive turn, as it happens when one experiences derealization.
Derealization (sometimes abbreviated as DR) is an alteration in the perception or experience of the external world so that it seems strange or unreal. Other symptoms include feeling as though one's environment is lacking in spontaneity, emotional colouring and depth (Wikipedia).
Performer No.1: I clean the fish with a lot of watter. Take off the scales. When the skin is smooth I can cook. I clean the fish every day.
..I have a knife in my hand. There’s a fish in front of me. I get shivery.
Performer No.2: I am the one that controls everything. I am the one that eats the fish.
Skin _On The Other Side goes beyond representation. It creates a phantasm of everyday loop where it is all about the membrane of reality and cutting through it.
